Have you ever wondered how the term Bennys was derived? Years ago, northern city vacationers arrived in town on the old rail lines. Their tickets and luggage tags had initials to indicate the stops.

B- Bayonne

E- Elizabeth

N- Newark

NY- New York City.

The person who rode the train south to vacation at the beach was called a "BENNY". Many spoke with telltale accents and were easy to recognize by the lack of seashore style clothing that they wore on the beach. In particular, black socks and sandals. Wearing street shoes on the beach was another tip-off to locals in the more southern beach towns.
